Bolex Shutter Speeds ~
Bolex Collector | Exposure Time = (fps x 360) / (Shutter Angle°)

190° aperture shutter disc. If you want to determine the exposure time while filming at 24fps, you multipy 24 (the number of frames per second) by 360 to get 8640

Take that product and divide by 190 (the aperture degree of your camera's shutter) -- the dividend results in 45.4736842, or 1/45 second exposure time.

Incidentally, if you have a list of exposure times (from a chart or user manual specific to your model) and want to determine the angle of your shutter aperture, you can use this formula:

Shutter Angle° = (fps x 360) / (Exposure Time)

The Bolex 16mm camera has long been a favorite of independent filmmakers and specialist cinematographers, mainly because it has great features such as single frame and, in some models, auto fades in and out. The story of Bolex started with the Ukrainian designer Jacques Bogopolsky [he later changed his name to Bolsky], based in Geneva, who developed a 35mm cine camera aimed at the growing amateur cine market. The design was patented in 1924 as the BOL-Cinégraphe. Later, Bogopolsky produced a 16mm camera, the Auto Cine camera. In 1930, he sold his business to the Swiss company Paillard [founded by Möise Paillard]. In ca. 1933 the Bolex H16 16mm camera was introduced. The design was loosely based on the Auto Cine camera, but vastly improved. In 1956 the Bolex H16 Reflex appeared on the market. In 1969 the company was sold to the Austrian company Eumig. When Eumig went bankrupt in 1981, the managers of Bolex International bought the 16mm business and founded Bolex International S.A. in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland, which is still manufacturing 16mm and Super 16 cameras.

The Bolex SBM

The final evolution of the mechanical /  spring motor H16. Effectively a Rex-5 (with its 400ft magazine saddle) but with the very sturdy Bolex single-lens bayonet mount. This late model has the improved very bright 13x viewfinder. A very good candidate for Super-16 conversion. This exact model is still sold by Bolex SA as their last mechanical camera (check their site for the new price!) -- Note: in 2007 Bolex no longer makes new cameras -- Definitely still a very viable professional 16mm. camera, and one that will go where most electric models will fail. This camera (serial #303803) is in good mechanical and physical condition (including viewfinder, prism, film path, speed, etc.), it was completely cleaned, maintained and checked over by me. Sold as pictured, with Rex-O-Fader accessory, a C-mount adapter and plug, and a couple of extra filter holders. The saddle port cover is missing, but it is a cheap and easy item to get from any Bolex dealer. Otherwise, the camera is ready to shoot in every other respect. For more specs on this model of H16, check this great site : city-net.com/~fodder/bolex/ -- I have many other accessories and lenses available to suit particular filming styles. Do not hesitate to write if you need any more information about this or my other Bolex items. No. #303803 • Sept 07 eBay: 170150073790
